The New iPad (2017) & How it Compares

Posted on Mar 27th 2017

With the release of a new Apple iPad you may be asking yourself, what is the difference between this and the iPad Pro or Mini 4?  Here, we’ll take a quick glance to shed light on those differences and outline what you should expect with this new model.

As you can see in the image above, this new iPad comes in three colors – Silver, Space Gray & Gold.

The price difference between the new iPad and the Pro is considerable for both sizes, coming in at a $270 savings. This means that the purchase of 2 new iPads at the 32GB size costs just $59 more than the purchase of a single Pro and is still below the Mini 4.

But, with that price difference, what is the true difference between the models?

The new iPad is slightly heftier than the Pro with an additional .05 inches of depth and an additional 30+ grams to the weight. Meanwhile, the screen size & resolution stay the same. So, what is the primary difference? This next iPad loses some of the “luster” of the Pro in the form of the fully laminated display, antireflective coating, wide color and true tone display.

Additionally, the new iPad has an A9 processor, which is slightly faster than the A8, but not quite as fast as the A9X in the Pro.

The newer iPad has an 8-megapixel camera versus a 12-megapixel in the Pro.  If you’re shooting any video you’ll also notice the difference between the 4K HD available on the Pro, versus the 1080p HD available on the new model. If you’re using your iPad for audio, you may also hear the difference between the 4 speaker audio available in the Pro, versus the 2 available in the new model.

Verdict: clearly, the focus for Apple with this particular iPad model is to appeal to a broader audience with a lower price point and if you’re using the iPad for basic web surfing, light online gaming and basic work (which covers a vast majority of users) it should be a great cost efficient alternative.  If you're buying an iPad for the first time or even looking to upgrade from the iPad Mini 4, this is an obvious choice.
