Wacky Wireless News: 4 Hilarious 80s Cell Phone Ads

Posted on Nov 26th 2013

The year of 2013 marked the 40th anniversary of the first cell phone. As we prepare for a new year that is sure to be full of new and ground-breaking technologies in the wireless world, we thought we’d take a trip down memory lane with these classic and hilarious vintage cell phone ads. We’ve come so far.

1983: The original “brick” weighed “only 30 ounces” and cost just under four grand. This original promotional video predicted, “Eventually seeing people using cellular phones may seem as commonplace as someone checking time on an electronic watch.” Apparently “electronic” was pronounced differently in the ‘80s.

1984: Nokia’s Mobira Talkman: because business never stops – not even for red lights.

1987: Promotional catalogs for Nokia’s $6,000 Cityman featured photos like this fitness model with the caption, “Everything is in your hands now. Connections. Time. The freedom to move.”

1989: Set to cheesy ‘80s background music, this Centel phone is perfect for when you’re stuck in a field of… sheep.

Although wireless phone technology has come along way, we can always apprciate the nostalgia (and humor) of how it has evolved.
