Posted on Sep 12th 2012

After months of rumors, leaks, false leads, and mockups, the iPhone 5 has finally been confirmed. Apple’s announcement verified what many suspected – the phone is slimmer with a 4-inch screen that accommodates a fifth row of apps and a whole new charging port. With Apple at the top of the cell phone market, consistently creating the next smartphone to beat, the announcement captured the attention of Apple enthusiasts and casual smartphone users alike. Check out the latest iPhone hardware updates:

  • iOS 6
  • LTE connectivity
  • Battery will last for up to eight hours of LTE browsing
  • Improved color saturation
  • Touchscreen technology integrated into the display, improving touch accuracy
  • 8 megapixel camera
  • Camera updates include panorama mode, better low-light photos and faster capture times
  • An upgraded processor improves the phone’s performance: Web pages load 2.1 times faster and songs load 1.9 times faster on the Music app
  • 8-pin dock connector called “Lightning” (Never fear, an adapter from the old 30-pin charger to the 8-pin charging port is available.)
  • Improved battery life even with the upgrade to LTE with 225 hours of standby time, 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing and 8 hours of LTE browsing
  • A third microphone for improved audio quality
Sprint, AT&T and Verizon subscribers will be able to pre-order the phone Sept. 14 and its official release will be Sept. 21. Costs with a two-year contract are as follows: $199 for the 16 GB model, $299 for the 32 GB model and $399 for the 64 GB model. Like the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 5 is available in black and white. Once you’ve secured your iPhone 5, stock up on accessories. A case and screen protector will go miles in protecting this glass-and-aluminum phone.
