Apple Watch Unveiled for April Launch

Posted on Mar 23rd 2015

Apple unveiled details about the long-awaited Apple Watch last month, which is expected to shake up the wearable device market when it hits stores in April. Like many wearable devices already on the market, Apple’s version of the smartwatch is basically a wrist-sized version of the iPhone, and allows users to make and receive calls, read emails and text messages, activate Siri and track fitness goals. For social media addicts, Facebook alerts and Twitter trends can also be seen at the twist of the wrist without the need to dig your phone from your bag or pocket.

Consumers can choose from three different models: the entry-level Watch Sport, the standard Apple Watch, or the luxury Watch Edition. The Watch Sport starts at $349, and a Watch Edition will set you back as much as $17,000. The difference in price lies in materials. For fitness buffs, the Watch Sport is made from lightweight anodized aluminum and rugged Ion-X Glass. The standard Apple Watch is stainless steel, in either shiny chrome or black, with a sapphire crystal face. As for the luxury model (or Apple Edition), it features an 18-karat gold casing in either yellow or rose gold.

While the Apple Watch will certainly appeal to gadget lovers, it may be attractive to companies as well.  An Apple Watch can help employees become more efficient by giving them faster access to phone features and freeing their hands for typing / multi-tasking.  Like any emerging technology, other business applications are sure to emerge.  Some of the current benefits for on-the-go professionals include:

  • View messages and accept calls without removing your phone from your pocket, purse, etc.
  • Confirm directions to a destination
  • Carry your electronic boarding pass (Apple Passbook)
  • Pay for lunch with a client (Apple Pay, store credit or debit card)
  • View calendar updates on-the-go
  • Track office productivity (BetterWorks app)
  • Get up to the minute stock information
  • Find public transportation schedules (Citymapper)
  • Business social media marketing updates
More information can be found on Apple’s website, where pre-order request are currently being accepted with an expected ship date to be sometime in late April.
